Mestre!

Mac Screencast & Walkthroughs

macOS

Record your Mac screen with camera, microphone, and on-device captions. Mestre is a native, focused Mac recorder. No heavy editing suite, no account required. It is designed for tutorials, code walkthroughs, product demos, lessons, and updates where viewers benefit from seeing your screen, with optional cursor and camera when you want them in the recording.

The name Mestre, meaning "teacher" or "master" in Valencian/Catalan, reflects the app's goal to support people who share knowledge, whether on social media, in a classroom, in an online course, or during a code walkthrough.

Features

Record what viewers need to see

Screen and window capture

Capture your full screen or selected windows. A guided status pill walks you through sharing your screen and getting ready to record.

Camera and microphone

Add your webcam and microphone when a personal walkthrough helps viewers follow along. Choose your camera and mic in Settings, or leave them off for screen-only recordings.

Presenter-friendly recording

When your camera is on, Mestre works naturally with macOS Presenter Overlay, a system feature that shows you on top of the screen you are sharing, along with system video effects. Mestre captures the recording; macOS handles the styling.

Captions on your Mac, not in the cloud

On-device subtitle generation

Generate subtitles from your microphone audio using Apple's on-device speech engine on your Mac. Your audio stays on your device; Mestre does not send it to a server for transcription.

Embedded MOV captions

Save captions inside your exported .mov file as a closed-caption track. One file, ready to share, with subtitles built in.

Separate subtitle file

Prefer a separate subtitle file? Export an SRT file alongside your video for compatibility with editors, courses, and publishing workflows that expect subtitles separately.

Stay in control without a heavy editor

Cursor and visibility

Show or hide the cursor in your recording, depending on what helps viewers follow along. You can also hide Mestre from the recording itself.

Keyboard shortcuts

Share Screen, start and stop recording, toggle camera and microphone, and open Settings from the keyboard. Help → Keyboard Shortcuts lists every shortcut in one place.

Simple settings

Choose your devices, caption language, watermark behaviour, and permissions in a focused Settings pane. No timeline, no templates, no cluttered editor.

Free to use, fair to support

Record free with a small watermark

Core recording is always free. Exported videos include a small "Recorded with Mestre!" badge so viewers know what you used to make them.

Mestre Premium

Unlock clean exports or choose between Off, Mestre, and Custom watermark modes with Monthly, Yearly, or Lifetime access. Premium is optional; recording itself is never paywalled. Subscriptions support Family Sharing, and 10% of subscription proceeds go to AMMEC, an accessibility charity. Pricing is shown in the App Store at purchase.

Custom watermark styling

Preview how the watermark will look in Settings before you export. Premium unlocks full control over text, size, colour, and placement.

Why Mestre!?

Mestre is built to be helpful, respectful, and easy to trust. Recording and transcription stay on your Mac. There is no account to create, no server required for capture or subtitles, and no ads or trackers. The app is focused on one job: helping you record presenter-style Mac videos without pulling you into a heavy editing suite. You can use it free with a small watermark, or unlock clean and custom exports with Premium when you are ready. 10% of Premium subscription proceeds go to AMMEC, which promotes autonomy and community integration for people with physical disabilities, supporting families and fostering inclusive environments.
